I offer the following services (listed here in alphabetical order):

  • COPY EDITING. According to Wikipedia, “the copy editor's job is summarized in the Five Cs: to make the copy [text] clear, correct, concise, comprehensible, and consistent. Typically, copy editing involves correcting spelling, terminology, punctuation, grammatical, and semantic errors; ensuring that the typescript adheres to the publisher's house style; and adding standardized headers, footers, headlines, etc.” I subscribe to this philosophy as regards text, but I take it a step farther. I look at documents holistically. This means that I correct text like traditional editors do (“correcting spelling, terminology, punctuation, grammatical, and semantic errors”), but I also correct metadata and markup. I use proprietary software to generate my editor's notes in HTML format.
  • CREATIVE WRITING/GHOST WRITING. I offer top-quality writing in most major writing styles—journalism, business, literary, academic, etc.—and on virtually any subject. The resulting text will meet all legal requirements to be subject to copyright protection. Normally, as the author, I retain the copyright and grant a license to the client, but if the client requires a ghost writer (that is, needs to claim authorship), the terms and conditions in my formal price quote establish a fee for this service.
  • ELECTRONIC PROOFREADING. The objective of proofreading is to correct spelling errors, typos and formatting errors. In electronic proofreading, the target document is an HTML file that contains the editor's report. The advantage of this type of proofreading, besides the advantages inherent in all electronic documents (such as the ability to quickly consult words and phrases, copy and paste, etc.), is that it allows multiple comments, by one or more editors, on a single phrase or word.
  • INDEPENDENT REVIEW. In an independent review, I review the work of another translator. In order to perform this service, I require the source and target documents. The result of this service is a reviewer's report in HTML file format.
  • LOCALIZATION. Localization is much broader than translation. In localization, the translator adapts the content to reflect the cultural and linguistic conventions of a given place. In most cases, this implies the use of a source document written in a language to create a document in another language in order to communicate a message that is appropriate for a given audience.
  • SCANNING/TEXT ENTRY. If your document is only available on paper or in an image format, I can scan or type the text into an MS Word document. When I capture text, I add appropriate Word styles (but please note that I do not attempt to create an exact copy of the original document).
  • SUBTITLING. I can add subtitles to a movie of any length. The resulting files are (1) a SubRip (.srt) text file and (2) the movie on one or more DVDs with the subtitles. The purpose of the DVD or DVDs is to show the timing of the subtitles.
  • TEXT COMPARISON. Need to identify the differences between two texts? I can prepare a report that shows the exact differences between two texts. The report, which is delivered in HTML or PDF format, shows any differences and quantifies them as a percentage of the original text.
  • TRADITIONAL PROOFREADING. The objective of proofreading is to correct spelling errors, typos and formatting errors. In traditional proofreading, the source document and the target document are the same, since the corrector of the text makes the corrections in the margins of the source document. In this case, my proofreading service complies with ISO 5776, a standard that establishes the symbols and other conventions of traditional proofreading.
  • TRANSLATION. According to virtual encyclopedia Wikipedia, "Translation is the interpreting of the meaning of a text and the subsequent production of an equivalent text… that communicates the same message in another language." This definition matches that of standard ASTM F 2575, which defines the translation process as "the creation of a target text based on a source text in such a way that it can be considered that the content and, in many cases, the form of both texts are equivalent." The key word is "equivalent." Since cultural and linguistic conventions in Spanish and English are so different, normally translation does not represent the best strategy to accomplish effective communication with a foreign audience.
